— This Saturday, Oct. 28, at 3 p.m., the Souza Scholarship for the Performing Arts and The Monroe-Woodbury Music Boosters will co-present the 28th annual Monroe-Woodbury Faculty and Friends Recital in the Monroe-Woodbury High School Auditorium.

These two volunteer groups have worked together for many years to raise money to support music students in the Monroe-Woodbury School District. Music Boosters was formed in July 1991 to advocate for music education in M-W. Among its contributions to M-W's exceptional music program, the group has established annual music scholarships to encourage further student development in the areas of band, chorus and orchestra.

The group has also purchased music-related equipment for M-W, such as the acoustic shells in both the high school and middle school auditoriums. The Boosters have provided financial assistance for student competition trips, and funded or sponsored special music-related learning opportunities in the schools.

The Souza Scholarship for the Performing Arts was established in 1980 to honor the memory of beloved late music teacher Robert W. Souza. Souza came to M-W Middle School in 1966 as an instrumental music teacher. With his rare blend of personality, warmth and unwavering dedication to his students, Souza was known among faculty and friends as a “teacher’s teacher.” His passing in 1980 prompted the creation of the Souza Scholarship Fund in memory of this very special man.

For a number of years, the group raised funds for scholarships by presenting theatrical shows, from The Sound of Music, to Oliver, to Oklahoma!, to the more recent Godspell, Mystery of Edwin Drood, and to this summer’s production of Peter Pan.

Between the Boosters and Souza, many scholarships have been awarded to talented M-W music students. Proceeds from this event will be shared by the two groups.

If you go The Faculty Concert will be held in the Monroe-Woodbury High School Auditorium on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m.

Tickets will be $12 for adults and $6 for students and seniors.
