Skoufis named chair of Task Force on People with DisabilitiesALBANY — Assemblyman James Skoufis (D-Woodbury) announced that Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie has named him chair of the Assembly Task Force on People with Disabilities.

The task force works with advocates and individuals to determine the needs of the disability community and, in conjunction with the Assembly’s standing committees, helps develop a legislative agenda.

“I’m deeply honored to serve as Chair of the Task Force on People with Disabilities and look forward to crafting real solutions that benefit the lives of New Yorkers with disabilities,” said Skoufis. “They deserve a strong voice and ally in their corner – I’ll continue to be just that to ensure they have the highest quality of life possible.”

Earlier this year, Skoufis authored and passed legislation that would ensure students with disabilities can participate in their high school graduation ceremony alongside their classmates (A.1595-A). The bill awaits action from the governor.

Skoufis is also actively working with advocates and the DMV to develop driver licenses with clearer coding for people with hearing loss.

In his new role, Skoufis will co-host Legislative Disabilities Awareness Day, an annual tradition that provides an opportunity to educate legislators and the general public on the issues facing New Yorkers with disabilities as well as recognize their achievements.
