MONROE — Beginning Monday, Sept. 11, the Monroe Free Library will be setting aside all fines and fees collected for overdue materials and donating the sum to a fund set up to benefit the children of local firefighters who died in the September 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

This will mark the 16th year of the library's memorial collection efforts.

Traditionally, the library takes in about $500 a week from fines generated from overdue materials, but in the week of the memorial drive that number often doubles.

Library patrons from surrounding towns sometimes travel to Monroe to settle their tabs and many Monroe regulars wait to pay until the fund week.

“We do this every year to let the families of our 9/11 fallen heroes know that they have not been forgotten,” said Carol Bezkorowajny, head of Circulation at the library.

The memorial drive runs from Monday, Sept. 11, to Sunday, Sept. 17. Outside donations will also be accepted.
