Monroe-Woodbury named Scholar-Athlete School of Excellence

Student-athletes on 24 Crusdader varsity teams had grade point averages of 90 or better this past school year

— The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) has announced that Monroe-Woodbury School District was among the 2016-17 Scholar-Athlete School of Excellence winners.

New this year, schools earned the School of Excellence award by having 75 percent of its varsity teams qualify for and receive the scholar-athlete team award during their respective sports seasons.

Scholar-Athlete teams require 75 percent of the team’s rosters grade point average be 90.00 or above.

Monroe-Woodbury was the only Section IX team to be recognized in this way.

The following teams earned Monroe-Woodbury recognition as a School of Excellence:

“Monroe-Woodbury athletes are so much more than just the teammates we see playing their heart out on the field, ice rink, track or court," M-W Athletic Director Lori Hock said in the school's press release announcing the citation. "They are hard working students, committed to doing their best in the classroom and out, who grow and learn with guidance from our amazing coaches and teachers.

"They dedicate time and effort to community service, because they recognize the importance of giving back," Hock added. "I am very proud of our student athletes, coaches and teachers, and congratulate them on this well earned recognition."

According to NYSPHSAA, the purpose of the “School of Distinction” and “School of Excellence” award is to unite varsity coaches in challenging their teams to achieve a statewide honor.
