Monroe firefighters honor Kenneth Marino with plaque at Mombasha Firehouse

— The Mombasha Fire Company and the Monroe Fire Department unveiling a plaque honoring Kenneth Joseph Marino, who lost his life while working in Rescue 1 of the FDNY on Sept. 11, 2001.

"Kenny was a 10-year member of the FDNY and 20-year member of several volunteer fire department, most recently with Mombasha Fire Company/Monroe Fire Department when he lost his life helping others," Joe Schubert, president of the Mombasha Fire Company, wrote in his letter detailing the ceremony.

Marino also had served with the Oceanside and Long Beach fire departments on Long Island.

Marino was 40 when he died. He left behind his wife, Katrina‚ and their children, Kristin and Tyler, who were only 3 and 1 years old at the time.

The master of ceremonies for the event was Richard Goldstein, past president of the Mombasha Fire company. Among the speakers were Vini Tankasali, past fire chief and now Orange County Fire Coordinator; John M. Karl III, past chief; Jay Jonas, deputy chief FDNY; Frank Faber, chaplain; the Rev. Tom Byrnes; and Mrs. Marino.
