NEWBURGH — Mary Cathryn Roth will give a master class on painting from an abstract point of view on Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the Mindy Ross Gallery in Kaplan Hall on the Newburgh campus of SUNY Orange.
Entitled "The Dynamic Interplay of Chaos and Order," the class will center on a very large piece in her solo exhibit On Time: Paintings & Photographs, presently in the Mindy Ross Gallery.
The master class begins at noon as Roth leads a mini tour of her solo show. She will discuss the materials she uses and what her process is as she moves from inspiration through the work involved to finished art piece.
Then the class moves across the gallery foyer area to the OBTC Great Room 101 where paper, paint, tape and other supplies will be set out for use by attendees in creating the grid or organic structure similar to the large acrylic on canvas work “Untitled, Earth” about which the class is focused.
The class will end on a high note with a “group exercise on chaos and order” with more paper and paint.
This event should prove to be an enlightening, hands-on program. It is also free and open to the public.
Roth holds a BA from Rice University and an MFA from City College of New York. She has been the recipient of painting and photography awards and has been awarded residencies in Vermont and Macedonia and studied in Paris and London as well. In addition to being the Director of Alumni and Community Engagement for the SUNY Orange Foundation, she is an art and photography adjunct at SUNY Orange.
The master class is presented by Cultural Affairs to which questions may be directed: (845) 341-4891/9386; cultural@sunyorange.edu (website www.sunyorange.edu/culturalaffairs).
Kaplan Hall is located at the corner of Grand and First streets, Newburgh. Free and secure parking is available in the Kaplan Hall garage accessible at 73 First St.
