Registration is now taking place for a special, free program for girls entering the sixth-grade at Monroe-Woodbury Middle School.

“A Girl’s Guide to Middle School” will feature three workshops designed to help incoming sixth-grade girls become more knowledgeable about three topics which “girls who’ve been there” say aren’t always discussed as part of middle school orientation.

The program

"Girl's Guide" is open to all fifth-grade girls currently attending Central Valley, North Main and Pine Tree elementary schools. It will be held at the South Orange Family YMCA in Monroe on Sunday, June 11, at 5 p.m., and will be led by three community experts.

The first workshop, called “Loving the Skin You’re In,” will be presented by Dr. Jamee Goldstein, a physician with Monroe Pediatrics. Participants will learn the basics of good skin care and acne, and how other girls’ decisions about their appearances shouldn’t influence theirs.

Goldstein has been a physician with Monroe Pediatrics for 13 years. She is a graduate of Lake Erie Medical College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pa. She is the recipient of the ACOP 2016 Community Pediatrician of the Year award and is a teacher at Terpsichore the Dancerschool in Monroe.

Middle School girls physical education and health teacher Lisa McKenzie will present “Improving Your Moving.” This workshop will focus on understanding that keeping fitness in one’s changing schedule can be a struggle, but with a few tips and quick workout ideas, girls won’t have a problem finding a fun way to exercise.

McKenzie has been teaching physical education and health classes at the middle school for 18 years. She loves teaching middle schoolers and encouraging them to get involved and participate in all the different sports and activities that are available to them throughout the community.

Kathleen Hassler, the middle school’s Guidance Department chairperson, will present “Friends vs. Foes: What You Should Know.” This workshop will focus on how friendships can change in middle school, but learning techniques on how to navigate friendships and different social changes as well as the challenges of social media can be helpful.

Hassler has worked in the middle school for the past 17 years, and has learned many things from students’ experiences. She enjoys helping students solve social problems in the middle school.

As a special bonus, participating Junior Girl Scout girls can earn a special custom badge as part of their attendance and participation.

Refreshments and snacks will be provided. The program has been created in partnership with Monroe-Woodbury Middle School, the South Orange Family YMCA and Cadette Troop 388. This is Troop 388’s Silver Award Project.

RSVPs are required by June 5. Reservations and additional questions should be emailed to: girlsguide388@gmail.com.
