Crusaders defeat Clarkstown South Vikings 6-4 in varsity softball

CENTRAL VALLEY — On Monday afternoon, April 17, the Monroe-Woodbury Varsity Softball Team hosted a non-league game against the Vikings of Clarkstown South High School.

The Vikings took an early one-run lead when they scored in the top of the second.

The Crusaders answered back, scoring three in the bottom of the second with an RBI-single by Sarah Leonard and an RBI-double Tara McCoy.

The Crusaders increased their lead to in the bottom of the third when Kira Purcell tripled, driving in a run. She would score on Samantha Ryan’s single.

The Vikings staged a rally in the top of the fifth when they got five consecutive hits and scored three runs, which brought the Vikings within one run of the Crusaders.

At that point Crusader Head Coach Penny Roberts brought in hard-throwing Jenn Lawson. Lawson issued a lead-off walk to load the bases, then she shut down the Vikings by striking out the next three batters.

The Crusaders added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Jackie Burke led off with double and scored on McCoy’s single.

The Crusaders' 6-4 victory brings their season record to 3-2.
