TUXEDO — Two small school districts are joining forces to expand the availability of interscholastic sports for their students.

The Tuxedo and Chester school districts are merging for select sports for the 2017-18 school year.

Both districts are submitting applications for the merger to the Orange County Interscholastic Athletics Association and Title IX Athletics Association for approval.

For Tuxedo, which continues to deal with the smallest high school population in the area, this means its students will have the opportunity to try out for sports in the Chester School District.

In a website posting, Tuxedo officials said the anticipated sports to be involved in the merger are varsity football, high school girls and boys basketball and soccer, wrestling and Modified "A" football for grades 7 to 9.

"We look forward to partnering with the Chester Union Free School District to provide our students with additional opportunities to participate in various sports while addressing team building skills, wrote Superintendent Nancy Teed in an April 4 letter to the Tuxedo school community.

Teed was officially named superintendent this past March after a national search.

Additionally, Tuxedo will continue to maintain its own school teams as long as the teams are comprised of the appropriate number of team members.

While information on the sports merger was posted on Tuxedo's website, nothing was yet posted on the Chester website to inform its district residents.

Chester and Tuxedo already have connections. Denis Petrilak, principal of Chester Academy, was the principal of George F. Baker High School before joining the Chester district about two years ago.
