Repeal Harley Doles

Next week, the Town Board will vote “Yes” or “No” on Supervisor Harley Doles’ proposal to repeal the accessory apartment law in Monroe.

In December, Orange County Planning Commissioner David Church issued a statement disapproving this measure. He correctly pointed out that this action would violate the comprehensive plans of both the Town and Orange County, because it would “take away the Town’s only mechanism for providing (affordable housing) units.”

Knowing that this exercise was a waste of time and resources didn’t stop Harley Doles from abusing his power and making political hay at the expense of the Town’s collective psyche.

He publicly badgered the Town Board until he got his way when Councilman Colon relented and gave him the third vote he needed to hold a futile public hearing on his proposed repeal. Doles knew that a new Comprehensive Plan and zoning law, both in the works, would contain revised recommendations on accessory apartments. He knew that no new accessory apartments could be approved or built because of a Town-wide building moratorium. He forged ahead anyway with his plan to delay the process of good government which United Monroe Councilmen Cardone and McGinn championed since they took office in 2016.

You will hear a lot from Harley Doles over the next several months about zoning and accessory apartments. He has the power to control Town Board meeting agendas. He has a history of cynical political deal-making in exchange for votes. He will project his power and his bad behavior on the volunteers and voters who began to turn Monroe around in 2013.

Doles will use any tactic to keep us from enjoying the benefits of a revised Comprehensive Plan and sensible zoning changes that will meet the needs of our community. He will do anything he can to weaken our resolve and make us miserable between now and November, because he believes it will help him to get reelected.

Harley Doles miscalculates the intelligence and fortitude of the people of Monroe. His propaganda tactics and manipulations have grown old. On November 7, 2017, we can complete the rehabilitation of our Town government. Our job is very simple. Get to the polls. Get your friends and family to the polls. Get absentee ballots to senior citizens and students. Register to vote.

Then, do what we have been waiting to do for four years. Vote for your United Monroe candidates on November 7th. Vote to repeal Harley Doles.
