— The Tuxedo School District has received a "school leader variance" from the New York State Education Department to have one principal to oversee George Grant Mason Elementary School and the George F. Baker High School.

Jason Schrammel will be the leader of both buildings, which are in close proximity to each other on the same campus.

"The size of the district allows for the promotion of cross-curricular collaboration giving teachers the ability to integrate key content area information from one class into another," Interim Superintendent Nancy Teed wrote in an email to The Photo News. "While this is the third year that the high school has had a STEM program, the district is expanding the STEM curriculum to the elementary school.

"The district has employed a teacher on special assignment who is serving as an enrichment integration specialist in the elementary school," Teed added. "This teacher is well versed in the common core standards, collaborates with each member of the teaching staff, and works with students to reinforce the standards while infusing the STEM curriculum into the program."

George Grant Mason School houses students in kindergarten through sixth-grade with seventh through 12th graders attending Baker.

Principal's curriculum vitaeTeed added Schrammel, who has worked in the district since 2007, will foster "the cultivation of a school climate that promotes effective staff development leading to both personal and professional growth."

Schrammel has experience teaching positions at the elementary, middle and high school levels and was Baker's assistant principal during the last school year. He has also coached sports at both the modified and junior varsity levels.

Schrammel earned his bachelor's degree from SUNY Buffalo, his master's degree in education, special education and teaching from the City University of New York and his post-master's degree certification in educational leadership and administration from Stony Brook University.

"Mr. Schrammel has established excellent working relationships with staff in both buildings and he knows all the students," Teed wrote. "This new arrangement, inclusive of a K-12 assistant principal, will promote effective teaching and learning as the communication among administrators and staff will be open and ongoing throughout each school day.

It will also give parents of students in all grade levels the opportunity to interact with both administrators who are knowledgeable about the inter-workings of both buildings in the district."

New assistant K-12 principalJoining Schrammel on Sept. 28 is Eric Sorenson, who becomes the district's K-12 assistant principal.

Sorenson comes to Tuxedo from the Comsewogue School District on Long Island, where he spent the last 10 years as a social studies teacher. He earned his bachelor's degree from St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, a master's degree in social studies education from Hofstra University, a second master's degree in education, education leadership and administration from St. Thomas Aquinas College and a school district leader advanced certificate from Niagara University.

Teed stressed the school district is "a strong, unified district."

"The Tuxedo Union Free School District is the closest thing to a 'private/public' school district," she added, "and the size allows for student-centered and innovative learning to occur."
