TUXEDO — Joanne Vernon, the current Tuxedo School Board of president, is assured of being reelected to the board because she’s the only one running for its one vacant seat.

Nonetheless, The Photo News asked Vernon for a statement about her candidacy as the May 20 election nears.

Her comments are as follows:
“It has been a rewarding experience to serve the community as Board of Education President of the Tuxedo Union Free School District. My decision to run for a third term, is based on my desire to continue the important work that is underway.

“Last year the BOE engaged the PCG consulting firm to help us develop a plan for the future of our high school and school district which is sustainable, fiscally responsible, and competitive. That resulting plan included the creation of a STEM Academy in our high school and the option of becoming a conversion charter school. I believe we need to ensure that our students have the opportunity to be creative, innovative thinkers and leaders, ready for the 21st century.

“These are challenging times for the Tuxedo School District and school districts throughout the county and state. Due to declining enrollment and loss of revenue the upcoming years will warrant careful analysis and planning. Having over 30 years of experience in education as a teacher and school principal, I am well prepared and committed to be part of the important work ahead.

“I ask for the support of the community to join me in the effort to ensure George F. Baker High School and GGM Elementary School continue to thrive and maintain their places of excellence both in New York State and nationally.

“Our schools should be the center of our community and together with the support of the community, we can ensure a bright and productive future for our students. I ask for your vote and for your support of the school budget on May 20.”
