Jr. Track and Field athletes chase gold

PALISADES PARK, N.J. — Several members of the Monroe-Woodbury Jr. Track and Field Team were put to the test last month as they competed at the USATF New Jersey State Jr. Olympics Track and Field Championships held at Overpeck Park.

The athletes had earned the chance to compete at this meet by placing in the top six at a qualifying meet held in May in Rutherford, N.J.

Many fine performances were witnessed at the two-day state competition both on the track and in the field. Bringing home the gold were:

Myles Jeune: (11-12 age group) turbo jav

Cole Siegel: (13-14) turbo jav
Steven Chanat: (13-14) racewalk

Casey Kiefer: (15-16) racewalk

Athletes finishing in the top six positions at this meet earned the opportunity to compete at the Region 2 Track and Field Jr. Olympic Championships to be held in mid-July in Jamestown. Pacing the team by placing in the top six in all three of their events entered were:

Leah Smith: (8 & U) 800m ( fifth), 1500m ( fifth), shot put ( fourth).

Daniella Napoli: ( 11-12) 800m ( second), 1500m ( second), 3000m ( second)

Bradley Byrnes:(13-14) 800m ( third), 1500m (third), 3000m (fifth)

In all, more than 20 members of the MW Jr. Track and Field Team qualified to continue to chase after their goal of competing at the USATF Jr. Olympic National Championships to be held in Greensboro, N.C., at the end of July.
