MONROE — Joe LoScalzo, the owner of Mr. Cone, the ice cream stand on Route 17M, continues his support this summer of the Monroe Volunteer Ambulance Corps’ helmet safety program for children.

When a uniformed, on-duty member of the ambulance corps sees a child 13-years or younger wearing a helmet while riding his or her bicycle, the member will present the youngster with a coupon for a small cup of ice cream redeemable from Mr. Cone.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year more than 500,000 people in the U.S. are treated in emergency departments, and more than 700 people die as a result of bicycle-related injuries.

Children are at particularly high risk for bicycle-related injuries. In 2001, children 15 years and younger accounted for 59% of all bicycle-related injuries seen in U.S. emergency departments.
