  • Lagrangeville resident Michael Tanzi earns the bragging rights as the first finisher at the inaugural triathlon to benefit the South Orange Family YMCA in Monroe. His time was 1:01:44. Town of Monroe Supervisor Sandy Leonard and Ross Miceli, the Yís branch director, hold his finishing tape.

MONROE — When Michael Tanzi crossed the finish line as the first person to complete Monroe’s first ever triathlon this past Saturday, it marked the beginning of an annual event within the community.

The inaugural YMCA of Middletown Triathlon at the Twin Lakes Waterski Park, to benefit the South Orange Family YMCA, featured participants who frequently take part in triathlons and those who were doing it for the first time.

“You had Monroe, you had Harriman, you had Central Valley, you really had all of southern Orange County involved,” said South Orange Family YMCA Branch Manager Ross Miceli. “People were so impressed with the way things came together. It was a great atmosphere. It really served the mission of what YMCAs do across the board and what this Y does in the community.”

Fund-raising tallies are being finalized and Miceli expects an estimated $15,000 to be raised. The money will be earmarked for future expansion at the Monroe facility, which opened in February 2011.

While organizers hoped to get 250 participants, they were pleasantly surprised to see they “were just shy” of 300 competitors, Miceli said. Added to that were the hundreds of spectators and volunteers who supported the event as it winded its way through parts of the Village of Monroe as well as the towns of Monroe, Chester and Blooming Grove.

“I think this has got to be one of the bigger events Monroe has had,” he said. “We’re going to build off this success. This will be our signature event for SOFY. We are already planning for next year.”
