On Saturday, the Village of Monroe Mayor Neil Dywer presented Hugh O’Neil with the David Smith Award for Outstanding Citizen. David Smith’s purchase of the Cheesecock patent and the construction of the gristmill paved the way for the success of Monroe. The Board of Trustees chose a member of the community who has contributed to Monroe through his volunteerism. Mr. O’Neil served his country as a member of the US Navy in both World War II and Korea and continues to serve Monroe through American Legion Post 488.
